Pre-requisites:

• if un-parented: Ability to use mouse and keyboard, and basic familiarity with a browser such as Chrome, IE, Firefox, etc.
• if parented: No pre-requisites, parent can guide if any issues using the mouse, typically in dragging and dropping and clicking over items accurately.

Abstract

The first four workbooks are tied together. We are working on a bonus optional volume.

 

This booklet (W1, W2, W3 and W4) is part of a series that teaches the basic principles of coding. It is meant to be used with the other workbooks in this coding series in the format of a course.

 

Each worksheet represents a chapter of a manageable size that does not intimidate the young student and allows space for making notes. The font used is large as customary for the intended age.

 

The series is suitable for any child who can already write and read. It is recommended for grades 2 and up. There are no pre-requisites.

 

Caveat:

This is an absolute beginner’s guide and as such may not be suitable for students of intermediate coding knowledge who need less guidance. If the student has just began using a computer, this is definitely the right book to start with.

 

The step-by-step instructions make the instruction easy to follow. It leads students from the creation of the first Scratch project to the understanding of loops, variables, motion, position of coordinates on the screen, and other concepts that are necessary for developing a coding mindset.

 

The workbook can be used either by the student at home, parented or otherwise. Alternately, teachers can use it as a great tool to support a larger group in the school classroom or extracurricular coding clubs.

 

The workbooks contain quizzes that require the student to reiterate new learning and help lock it in.

 

Scratch is a visual tool, and thus this book aims to also provide a visual way of learning in becoming proficient with various coding workflows.

  

Learning how to code is a fun and exciting way to practice one’s focus and attention. Students will pick up several mathematical concepts and mindsets unavoidably without even noticing. Additionally, students who do not have much experience with computers will find this book easier to follow, the topics are explored thoroughly.

The Scratch Books in This Series:

 

Before publishing, our team ran usability labs on each workbook. In one case children held paper printouts of the workbooks side by side with their computers, in the second case a PDF digital alternate was used.

We found that with the digital version the students had to switch back and forth between screens and this was not great for focusing on instructions. Learning was less efficient, understanding took longer.

We observed, and students reported a better outcome when paper copies were held and learning was uninterrupted. Similar results happened if digital copies were read from a separate tablet or laptop.

We broke down a large topic into smaller workbooks to prevent overwhelming the students.
